First and foremost the Gutenburg WordPress update replaces the default WYSIWYG editor (as of version 5.0). With an improved interface it displays content visually and removes many restrictions of the previous editor. Going forward it will be more intuitive to the user and be will make it easier including rich media.
With such a large a leap from text editing to visual editing within the WYSIWYG the approach to how content handled requires an equally weighty update. The Gutenburg plugin forces users to think of their content as blocks. With these individual blocks content editors are able rearrange, swap, insert and combine media to build content, all with little or no technical knowledge.
The text based WordPress editor relies heavily on using custom ‘shortcodes’ to introduce alternative layouts. These custom codes will be replaced with blocks that will now handle these advanced layouts.
Be under no illusion, the Gutenburg update is a fundamental shift in how editors think about their content. Being a highly popular and industry leading CMS, WordPress sets benchmarks for other content management systems to follow. Drupal, Joomla and Concrete5 have editor updates on the horizon and will be seeking influence for the most widely used CMS out there.
To maintain current functionality and content support for the existing sites custom shortcodes, custom post types and meta-boxes will remain. Transition paths will be put into place to make migration to content blocks as easy as possible.
For the time being WordPress are allowing the legacy editor to remain available if needed. It is available the classic editor plugin can be downloaded from here.
